History of Sigma Alpha

The UP Sigma Alpha Sorority started two years after the founding of its brother fraternity, Alpha Sigma. It was officially recognized by the University of the Philippines in October 24, 1964, and was organized by 19 charter members in UP Diliman lead by Cecilia Pabalan-Tolentino, Josefina Gutierrez-Tayag and Bella Marcelo-Villanueva. In 1970, the Sigma Alpha chapter at UP Los Baños was established by Rose Valencia, a sorority member from Diliman. The sorority at UPLB continues to be true to the Diliman vision of academic excellence, no physical initiations and “Salience in Action”.

Because of dwindling membership, the sorority in Diliman became inactive in 1980. It was only in 2003 that the sorority was revived by Xennia Taccad, a daughter of a Sigma Alphan and an Alpha Sigman, who joined the sorority in UP Los Baños and then re-established the sorority in Diliman. At present, Sigma Alpha Sorority continues to have a strong and active presence among other university organizations in both UP Diliman and UP Los Baños.
